A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN),  Mike Ozekhome is currently leading the legal team for the defence of the detained leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The court trial which resumed on Tuesday morning began when Justice Binta Nyako arrived at the court.

Explaining what informed the addition of Ozekhome to the legal team, Kanu’s lawyer said the IPOB leader decided to beef up his legal team with more senior lawyers in the country in a bid to have better arguments and hearing at the court.

Kanu, who was brought into the court by security operatives at 9:50am, first exchanged pleasantries with his family members and lawyers before entering the dock for his trial.

Meanwhile the presiding judge for the trial of the IPOB the leader, Justice Binta Nyako has lambasted the Department of State Security (DSS) for the way the man appeared in court during his trial on Tuesday.

According to the Cable, the judge, who expressed displeasure at the way the IPOB leader had been denied maximum comfort which showed in his appearance, ordered the DSS to allow the man change his Fendi outfit which has been on him since he was brought back to the country in June, 2021.

The judge also reportedly asked the DSS to allow the IPOB leader bath, eat properly and exercise his body when he wants to, just as she told the Biafra agitator and his legal team that  detention facility is not a five-star hotel.

“I don’t want to see him in these clothes again. This one is almost off-white. Also, make sure that you allow him to exercise,” Nyako said.

In his reaction, the leader of Kanu’s legal team, Chief Mike Ozekhome, told the judge that despite many past orders for better treatment for his client, he is still being subjected to poor treatment and solitary confinement at the DSS custody.

The judge, however, adjourned the case till further notice.
