The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has disclosed plans to adjust telecom tariffs, assuring that the increase will be lower than the 100% requested by telecom operators.

Speaking after a stakeholders’ meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja, Dr. Tijani emphasized the government’s commitment to balancing consumer interests and the industry’s growth.

“We understand the operators’ concerns, but we are committed to ensuring a balance. The focus should not just be on tariff hikes; we are also prioritizing meaningful connectivity and the sector’s growth,” said Tijani.

He further clarified the government’s position, saying, “Telecom companies have been pushing for a 100% tariff increase. However, we will not approve such a steep hike. The NCC is still reviewing the situation and will provide a clear directive on the way forward.”

Dr. Tijani highlighted the importance of protecting consumers while ensuring telecom operators have the capacity to invest in infrastructure. He added that the government would no longer rely solely on private companies for infrastructure development.

The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, assured that the specific percentage for the tariff increase would be revealed after further consultations. “Stakeholders will reconvene in two weeks to review feedback and finalize the adjustments,” Maida stated.

Femi Adeniran, representing Airtel Nigeria’s CEO, underscored the need for tariff adjustments to manage escalating operational costs. “This is essential to sustain the sector and improve service delivery,” he remarked.
