Some Nigerians allegedly recruited by the National Assembly Service Commission but failed to be absolved by the leadership of the Apex legislative body have staged a peaceful protest at the lobby of the National Assembly in the early hours of Tuesday, 8th of June, 2021, calling on the authority of the National Assembly to do the needful and accommodate them.
Penangle.com learnt that the recruited but not absolved workers alleged that they were duly recruited by the appropriate authority in 2018, in a fair and transparent manner by the agency saddled with such responsibility – National Assembly Service Commission, the number of those recruited then, the protesters alleged was around 500, but since them, some over 200 were accommodated by the National Assembly while others have their fates hanging in the balance, with no credible information source regarding their fate.
The concerned persons alleged that all efforts to make a difference have not paid off, as such, they have decided to cry out for Nigerians to know what they are passing through.
They claimed that on getting the National Assembly job offers, a number of them resigned their previous appointments, making life too difficult for them to bear.
In an emotion laden voice, one of the affected workers, who said the name on her appointment letter is Iyanuolwa Babatunde, said “We were given appointment letter by the National Assembly Service Commission, dated 2018, some have been absolved and some were yet to be absolved, giving excuses such as no resources, and some were absolved, it was three in April this year. We have waited so long, and we have to ask questions”.
Another one identified himself as Babangida said if “President Muhammadu Buahri is fighting corruption and abuse of office in the country’s, other leaders across different levels should follow suit, I am a northerner, and I believe in President Muhammadu Buahri, but this in this situation, the National Assembly leadership must rise above board and do the needful”
The protesters are demanding explanations on the criteria for those that have been absolved.
Responding to the issues raised, a National Commissioner of the National Assembly Service Commission representing North West, Biliaminu Shinkafi told reporters that the commission is on the matter, as they share in the pains of the concerned persons, expressing hope that before the end of this quarter, something good will come up.
“We have discussed their issue at several fora, and the leadership of the National Assembly is aware of the situation, we raised it when Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service came to us, we raised it yesterday and we are still going to look into it today”, he assured.
