Bayelsa State Police Command has paraded one Christopher Chiabata for allegedly killing his wife with a pestle in their residence at Onuebum community in the Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

Chiabata, who was paraded alongside other crime suspects, claimed he killed his wife in self-defense during a fight over money made from their farm business.

He said after committing the crime, he attempted to commit suicide by drinking sniper, however, he was rescued by neighbours who then handed him to the police.

The suspect, who said that they had been married for over 30 years, explained that they had been quarreling for a long time because his wife would not give him access to money they jointly made from their farm business.

Chiabata said: “Whenever my wife took our produce to the market, she would not give me account of the sales. For two years she refused to give me account of the money we have realised from the farm. So one day, I called her to give me account and when she refused we started fighting until neighbours separated us.”

“Fed up with the whole development, I asked her to pack out of the house the following day but she refused. At that point, we started fighting again and she was stronger than me so each time we fought, she would beat me mercilessly. So this time, as she was beating me, out of anger, I struck her with a pestle.”

“It was at that point she collapsed and neighbours helped rush her to University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital where she died. When I heard she had died, I took Sniper in an attempt to kill myself but neighbours were quick to come to my rescue and took me to hospital.”

Also paraded by the Bayelsa State Police Command was one Lazarus Josiah who was apprehended for allegedly strangling his mother, Mrs. Chain Bishop, to death for reasons unknown to both the police and other relatives of the suspect. The act was committed at Odioma community in the Brass Local Government Area of the state.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, Michael Okoli, said that all the suspects would be arraigned in court after police investigations.
