Acting National Leader, Afenifere Egbe Ilosiwaju Yoruba, Chief Olabiyi Durojaiye has condemned in strong terms the recent breakdown of law and order which led to the loss of lives and properties as well as a loss of trust and a sense of community among the hitherto peaceful residents of Shasha, in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Chief Durojaiye described the incident as one major security breach too many, observing that no patriotic Nigerian can feel comfortable in the face of these ominous signs that have unfortunately been allowed either by omission or commission to persist unabated nationwide for too long.
In a statement by the national secretary of Afenifere, Bayo Aina, the elder statesman observed that the time has come for all those who sincerely love Nigeria and desire its continued peaceful existence as a corporate body, particularly those constitutionally mandated to maintain peace and order to put heads together quickly and find a just, equitable and lasting solution to these recurring breaches of peace and security nationwide.
It would be recalled that a tribal clash that claimed several lives broke out in Shasha community, Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital following a fight between an Hausa and a Yorùbá man which led to the death of the latter.
Eyewitness account said the Hausa man was beating a Yorùbá pregnant woman who complained about littering the front side of her shop with rotten tomatoes.
The Yoruba man reportedly intervened to stop the Hausa man from beating the pregnant woman and in the process, the Hausa man hit him with charm and immediately he slumped and died later in hospital.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, his Ondo State counterpart and four Northern governors had visited the community and appealed to the warring faction to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign.
The governors also promised on behalf of Nigeria Governors’ Forum to help Oyo State Government rebuild the burnt market in Shasha community while the state government has also promised palliatives for the people who lost their properties.
Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu has ordered the immediate deployment of Police Intervention and Stabilization Forces to Oyo State to reclaim the public space, reinforce security and bolster public confidence in the areas affected by the recent crisis in the state.
