The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has condemned in its totality the alleged assault on the officers of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency, OYRTMA, who were arrested and detained for apprehending an immigration personnel who violated traffic rules.
The Governor expressed this during his courtesy visit on the victims at their various residences in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.
Governor Makinde on Monday swung into action to unravel the alleged assault on two officers of OYRTMA by the men of the Nigeria Immigration Services, while the OYRTMA officers were discharging their statutory duties on Friday.
Furthermore, the governor , on Monday morning, visited the two victims at their respective residences in Ibadan, to further ascertain their health status.
His first port of call was Oke’badan home of Nurudeen Abiola while he was also at the residence of Taiwo Adegbo, Binukonu Olunloyo area of Ibadan.
Speaking with newsmen immediately after the visit, Governor Makinde described the incident as unfortunate, adding that, Oyo State is known for the rule of law and everyone must obey traffic rules irrespective of his or her status.
He vowed to prosecute the culprit.
“This shouldn’t be happening at all. This isn’t acceptable. Whether you are an immigration officer or you work for another paramilitary agency. These people are just trying to enforce the law of the state.
Because you work for a federal agency does not make you superior.
“I have told the Attorney-General of the state that we will follow this through we will write to the immigration authority and prosecute the people involved. This isn’t acceptable in Oyo State.” The governor.
Governor Makinde also visited the office of the Nigeria Immigration Service, at Agodi, Gate, Ibadan where he was received by the state Comptroller, Abdulrasheed Ademola.
According to governor Seyi Makinde, the purpose of the visit was to seek more cooperation between the inter and intra agencies of the government and avoid reccurrence of such incidence.
“Oyo State is known for inter and intra-agency co-operation. The incident is quite unfortunate. What I have asked the state Comptroller of Immigration is for them to co-operate with us. They said this happened at the zone level. We will reach out to the Assistant Comptroller-General,
“Oyo State must be known for the rule of law. We have zero tolerance for people breaking traffic rule. I have been assured that Nigerian Immigration Oyo state command and the zone will cooperate with us to get to the bottom of this and ensure that this does not happen again.
Among the entourage of the state governor were the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya, (Rtd); the State Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo; Executive Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, CP Sunday Odukoya; and some political appointees.
