The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has warned Nigerians against a fake online voter registration portal circulating on the internet, saying the Continuous Voter Registration exercise ended on July 26, 2026.

The commission issued the warning in a public notice on Saturday, October 3, after a website began circulating claims that INEC had opened a fresh nationwide online registration exercise from September 28 to October 27.

INEC said the platform, identified in its notice as a fake registration website, is not affiliated with the commission.

It warned Nigerians against clicking on the link or submitting their personal information, citing the risk of data theft and misuse.

“Members of the public are strongly advised not to click on the link or submit any personal information on the website, as doing so may expose them to the risk of having their sensitive personal data harvested or misused.”

The commission added that claims that a new nationwide online registration exercise is currently ongoing are false.

“The Commission further wishes to clarify that the voter registration exercise closed on 26th July 2026. Any information suggesting that a new nationwide online voter registration exercise is currently ongoing through the above mentioned website is false.”

INEC urged Nigerians to rely on its official communication channels for information about voter registration and other electoral activities.

“INEC urges the public to remain vigilant and to verify all electoral information through the Commission’s official communication channels.”

The fraudulent platform reportedly presents itself as a “Final Phase of Nationwide Online Voter Card Registration.”

It claims to offer services including voter registration updates, transfer of voter registration to another polling unit and replacement of lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.

The platform also claims that registration and PVC delivery are free.

However, INEC said the website has no connection with the commission and warned Nigerians not to provide their details on it.

The warning comes after INEC concluded the nationwide CVR exercise on July 26 following an extension of the registration deadline.

The clarification comes as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The commission’s current official election calendar lists January 16, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

INEC had earlier said the voter register would be central to preparations for the polls, with the commission also planning measures to strengthen the integrity of the register.

The commission has also been preparing electoral technology and other materials ahead of the elections.

In February, INEC projected N873.78 billion for the conduct of the 2027 general elections, including about N209.21 billion for election technology. It separately proposed N171 billion for its 2026 operations, covering activities such as bye-elections and off-cycle polls.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Electoral Act provides for electronic transmission of results, with manually completed Form EC8A serving as the primary basis for collation where electronic transmission is not possible because of communication or network problems.
