Speaker House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila has described some sections of the media in the country as heavily embedded in yellow journalism, deriving pleasure in quoting news sources out of context.
Gbajabiamila stated this on the floor of the house, while responding to the line of reports in some dailies, which situated his welcome address on 15th of September as blanket comparison of agitators with Boko Haram and ISWAP.
He said his speech on the floor of the Green Chamber was purely quoted out of context.
The speaker said “Yellow journalism, uninspiring journalism”is the bane of the professional misconduct in the country.
His statement was coming on the heels of reports from some sections of the media regarding his statement, where he vowed that the nation will bring to bear all the power of government to clear the doubts of who he called miscreants.
In Tuesday’s plenary, Mr. Speaker had read on the floor of the house that
“We must now add to these concerns an emerging threat that presents the same clear and present danger. In the South of Nigeria, East and West, MISCREANTS AND CRIMINALS MASQUERADING AS SEPARATIONISTS ACTIVISTS have emerged to wreak havoc, take lives and commit economic sabotage against fellow Nigerians and the state.
“These people, in their inclination for devastating violence against fellow citizens, their appetite for the destruction of private property, their disruption of academic activities, commerce, and industry, their propensity for defiling institutions of the state, society and community, their refusal to engage in debate, or to consider the possibility of dissenting opinions and alternative viewpoints, are no different from Boko Haram and ISWAP. Given space and time, they will take our nation down the same path of destruction.”
Gbajabiamila said what he meant was that their are new set of people apart from the genuine separatists and agitators, not the criminals masquerading themselves as agitators.
He however encouraged journalists in the country to continue to be objective to report what transpired on the floor.of the House without any element of bias.
