A disturbing incident unfolded at University College Hospital (UCH) today around noon as a group of people suspected to be thugs stormed the hospital premises to claim the body of one of their deceased members.
Eyewitnesses’ report said that the group, allegedly from the Beere area of Ibadan, refused to follow the proper procedures for claiming the body, sparking a heated confrontation with hospital staff members.
The situation escalated when the thugs threatened to beat the Doctor in charge, but their attack was thwarted by one Mr. Seun, a brave hospital security officer who intervened to protect the doctor. Unfortunately, Mr. Seun was brutally beaten to stupor by the suspected thugs.
The hospital’s security team quickly alerted the police, who arrived promptly to restore order. In an effort to disperse the unruly crowd, police officers fired tear gas into the air, bringing the chaotic situation under control.
“We condemn this senseless act of violence and intimidation, we are grateful for the bravery of Mr. Seun and the swift response of the police and we will continue to work with the authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” said a worker in the hospital.
The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify the perpetrators. The hospital has also increased security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The condition of Mr. Seun, the injured security officer, is currently stable, and he is receiving treatment at the hospital.
