President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a new Chief of Army Staff following the death of Lieutenant-General Ibrahim Attahiru.
The new Army Chief is Major-General Farouk Yahaya, a former General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter-Terrorism, Counter-Insurgency military outfit in the North East, codenamed Operation HADIN KAI.
A statement signed by Acting Director Defence Information, Defence Headquarters, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu said “The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.
“Prior to his appointment, Major-General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter Terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East, code named Operation HADIN KAI.”
Major-General Yahaya replaces the late General Ibrahim Attahiru who recently died in a plane crash en-route Kaduna alongside with other senior military officers and crew members.
He hails from Zamfara State.
