Residents of Apomu and Ikire in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State were thrown into mourning session as daredevil armed robbers killed an unspecified number of people on Wednesday evening when they invaded two new generation banks and a police station in the two communities.
Newsmen gathered that the men of the underworld attacked the two communities simultaneously around 6pm, shooting sporadically in all directions.
Some of the residents told newsmen that the robbers came into the communities around 6:30pm and were shooting sporadically. They added that the robbers attacked the police station and the two banks simultaneously in order to stop security agents from thwarting their dastardly operation and in the process the bullets fired injured residents while unspecified number of persons were killed during the attack.
“I don’t know maybe they were able to enter the bank and chart away money but I am sure that people were killed”, a resident stated.
Police Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident, said the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olawale Olokode was at the crime scene as at the time of filing this report.
“The robbers attacked two banks and they killed some people. They attacked a police station too during the operation.” Opalola stated.
The statement signed by Opalola on behalf of Osun State Commissioner of Police reads:
“Gentlemen of the press, it is true that there was attempted Bank Robbery in Ikire/Apomu today, Wednesday 2nd June, 2021 at about 1810hours (6.10 pm).”
“The Armed Robbers numbering about Thirty-five(35) came in about Five(5) Vehicles, Simultaneously attacked Ikire Divisional Police HQ and the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) pinned down at Ikoyi-Osun with several explosive devices and several gun firing in a bid to subdue the capacity of the Police while attempting to Rob First Bank Ikire and Access Bank Apomu respectively.”
” It is unfortunate that ASP Osho Oluranti, Inspector Lekan Olalere, Two (2) Special Constabularies; namely Oladeni Olalekan, and Oyedeji Muyideen were shot dead in the process.”
“On sighting the overwhelming Policemen Comprising: Prompt Response Unit (PRU), CP’s Surveillance team, IRT Operatives, STS, 39 PMF, JTF, along with the local Security outfits,who swiftly engaged them in a fierce gun duel, the Robbers began to flee. While escaping, they shot sporadically, and regrettably three (3) Civilians were shot namely; Toheeb Oyebola, Temilorun Adebiyi and one other, (whose identity is not yet known), all male.”
“They did not succeed robbing any of the Banks. The assailants fled to the bush with gun shot wounds, abandoning two of the operational vehicles they came with.”
“All the Corpses deposited at Oluyoro Catholic Hospital morgue, Apomu.
Efforts is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing Suspects.” The statement concluded.
