A man said to be mentally unstable identified as Mai Ruwa was on Tuesday set ablaze by an angry mob for alleged blasphemy.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Sade village of Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Newsmen learnt that Mai Ruwa was first taken to a police post in the village on Monday after his alleged act of blasphemy, but on Tuesday, some angry mob came to the police post and forcefully dragged him outside where they lynched and set him on fire.

Narrating what transpired, a resident from the village said, “a girl had come to fetch water from Mai Ruwa’s borehole, and the girl begged the deceased in the name of God and the prophet to allow her to fetch water but he got so angry to the extent that he allegedly insulted her parents and the prophet.”

The resident further said that the act made people angry and that they took him to the police outpost station on Monday, but by Tuesday, the news of the blasphemy had spread to every nook and cranny of the village, prompting more people to get angry.

The source said, “By the next morning, the issue spread everywhere and everyone in the village was provoked. Later, a group of angry youths stormed the police outpost, subdued the police officers around and dragged out Mai Ruwa. He was beaten to death and his dead body was burnt.”

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Police Command has not reacted to the incident as at the time of filing this report.
