Since when the unfortunate news of the demise of Barrister Isaac Ajiboye Omodewu was broken, my mind has been occupied by different thoughts. I’ve been asking myself questions, seeking answers that have yet to come. I’ve scanned through the existence of progressive politics in Oyo State for several decades, from my birth to my active participation in politics. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t provide definite answers to my self-asking questions. As I lay awake, unable to sleep, I decided to put down these few lines.

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been plagued by a series of tragic events, with the sudden passing of key leaders leaving a devastating impact on the party. The departure of these visionary leaders at different times has created a leadership vacuum, affecting the party’s cohesion and direction.

The sudden and tragic death of Chief Bola Ige, a replica of Chief Obafemi Awolowo in progressive politics, marked the beginning of a series of unfortunate events that would plague the progressives movement which has taken different names in the South Western Nigeria in general and Oyo State in particular. We are all living witnesses to the aftermath of his demise, which had far-reaching consequences, including the outcome of the 2003 general elections.

During Governor Isiaq Abiola Akanji Ajimobi’s first tenure, the sudden passing of former Governor, Alhaji Lamidi Onaolapo Adesina in November, 2012 dealt a significant blow to the party. Governor Ajimobi, who was already shouldering the responsibilities of governance, was now faced with the additional task of managing political engagements, a role that Alhaji Lam would have otherwise handled. This unexpected turn of events undoubtedly put immense pressure on Governor Ajimobi.

After Governor Ajimobi’s eight-year tenure, the political landscape in Oyo State changed, leading to the party’s loss in the 2019 elections. We had hoped that he would be at the helm, repositioning the party for future elections. However, fate had other plans. His appointment as the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party brought hope that he would help put the party at the state level on a strong footing, but sadly, death disallowed him to perform this critical role. We lost Governor Isiaq Abiola Akanji Ajimobi, whose leadership was sorely needed. Then, just a few months before the 2023 general elections, Governor Christopher Adebayo Alao Akala (Oyato Governor) passed away. His leadership was crucial in holding the party together.

Barrister Isaac Ajiboye Omodewu, as party Chairman, had earlier constituted a reconciliation committee to rescue the party from collapse. The committee, led by Senator Olufemi Lanlehin, performed excellently in reconciling warring factions but these efforts were unable to save the party’s loss. However, the party was dealt another blow with the sudden death of Honourable Musiliudeen Olaide Akinremi (Jagaban), representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency.

In a shocking turn of events, exactly 40 days later, Barrister Issac Ajiboye Omodewu passed away. This calamity has left the party reeling.

As we navigate this challenging period, I appeal to God to save Oyo APC from these recurring tragedies. I also appeal to the State Executive Committee to work towards unity of the party. The best honour they can give to the departed Chairman is to continue with his reconciliatory efforts, which have been yielding positive results before his sudden death.

Let us put aside our differences and work towards a common goal. Let us reposition the party and prepare for the upcoming by-election and 2027 general elections.

I want to humbly make a heartfelt appeal to our past and present political office holders in the party to take full responsibility for continuing the efforts of genuine reconciliation. This will foster a sense of strong unity among party members, which is essential for our collective success. As the Yoruba adage goes, “A king who reigns over a peaceful community will not be forgotten.” Let us strive to create a harmonious and united party, where every member feels valued and included.

May God guide and assist you all in this noble endeavour. May your leadership be marked by wisdom, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to the well-being of our party and its members. “Aseye lalakan sepo” – May our party be blessed with peace and prosperity.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the families of our departed leaders and others. May their souls rest in perfect peace. May their legacy inspire us to work towards a brighter future for Oyo State APC.

Long Live Oyo State APC!
Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria!
