In commemoration of the 2021 World Youth Skills Day, a non governmental organisation, SkillNG said it is set to empower at least 1000 Nigerian youths in free digital skills.

The empowerment, it was gathered, is to help the youths increase their chances of having a sustainable source of livelihoods derived from the digital economy.

Founder of the group, Ibrahim Oredola made the disclosure on Wednesday during a press conference held at Bashorun area of Ibadan.

Oredola said the objective of the training is to bring the best out of Nigerian youths in line with their mission of empowering and up-skilling the African youth workforce.

SkillNG is a skill development and talent management company that leverages on technology to help young people learn in global demand of digital and employment readiness skills.

It would be recalled that in 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared July 15th as the World Youth Skills Day in order to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.

According to Oredola, there is demand for digital skilling more than ever just as companies are also trying to navigate the new normal with the demand for more digitally skilled talents who can work remotely.

He gave the focus area of the training to include, product design, web design, graphics design, social media marketing, copywriting, SEO & content creation, data analysis, google workspace, customer service, software testing and brand identity design.

He said “We have partnered with reputable organisations and businesses to launch Project #Skill1000 in celebration of #WorldYouthSkillsDay 2021. The Project #Skill1000 is aimed at helping 1000 young people get skilled, get job/internship placement and geometrically increase their chances of having a sustainable source of livelihoods derived from the digital economy.

“So, by training these 1,000 young people free, we will be giving them a better chance at securing paid employment, not just that, they will also have the right skills to kick start their freelancing career.

“The core objective is that after the project, we plan to have at least 70 percent success rate of young people who have not only acquired significant digital and soft skills, but also who have meaningfully kick started their career on the right path and with the right resources and guidance.”

“It is also part of our plan that this project contributes to the re-generation of the economy post-COVID in the education and training sector by giving another 1,000 young people access to up-skilling their digital skills in a more efficient way. With more people out of job, with many physical businesses being affected by the pandemic, and looking at the IMF’s data that to check the growing unemployment, Nigeria needs to create over 13,000 jobs daily.”
